I moved to California about two years, and the west coast still seems like a strange place to me. The sunlight is different here, and I don’t know the names of any of the trees. These are from an ongoing project where I try to make sense of the foreign environment I ended up in.

I spent a few days in the hospital last month, right after this was assigned. Armed with nothing more than a few magazines to keep me entertained (I didn’t expect to be there as long as I was), I took the following shots of my surroundings to keep busy and fight boredom.

Father to Son - A family business.

My grandfather started a small fire extinguisher company out the back of a beat up pick up truck in a small rural town outside of Pittsburgh, PA in the mid 50′s.
This business has grown to 80+ employees and a handing down through the generations.
My parents have given me the freedom to choose a path that makes me happy, I’ve chosen not to stay within the family business.
My brother on the other hand, along with his wife have joined the family business with in the past 4 years and are rapidly approaching a point where my father will step down.
To be an outsider watching this transition unfold, I have no choice then to document it.
The slowing down of one chapter of my father’s life and the speeding up of my brothers. This is the cycle of life. I can’t imagine how my father feels. I know he has trained my brother well.
I feel that this image really encapsulates that transition I’m witnessing between them.

Photographed on location at the warehouse in Greensburg, PA

Title: Documentary Photo Story

Assigner: Colin Young-Wolff

Description: Find a subject or issue that moves you and spend some time with it (whether that means a few hours or a few days is up to you). Use still photographs to tell the story, hopefully revealing something about the character or essence of the subject that a series of snapshots wouldn’t show. Revisit it again if needed.
You can post 3-4 images on TIAPB and then link to a full photo gallery if needed for your story.
