Assignment: The Landscape Revisted

Description: I have recently taken a trip with friends to Woodstock and decided to bring my 4×5. I woke up one morning at 5am, loading my film holders, grabbed my tripod, meter and camera; and went out to make a few photographs of the morning landscape.

While sitting in the woods, waiting for the sun to come up a bit further, it all caught up with me, how long it has been since I last sat with a landscape alone and really just took time to appreciate it. I also realized how special the film process is and how it really slows you down, again, to appreciate the act of making a photograph.

The assignment for this month is to revisit the landscape alone and photograph it using a film camera.

“Natural disasters happen all the time, like landslides, floods, earthquakes. We live on a planet that isn’t static. Friday, March 11th, we witnessed a natural disaster with a very human toll. The earthquake in Japan was of such magnitude that even the most prepared nation in the world to handle a disaster of this type was overwhelmed. It wasn’t the earthquake alone, which was devastating enough but watching a 30 foot high wall of mud and debris wipe entire communities away was beyond any ability I personally had to comprehend.

I made this photo during a recent shoot, but thought this would be a great cover for New York magazine. I have always admired the layout and the full page photos that are printed in the magazine. I would love to see a photo this dark on a cover.

In April of this year I posted photos of a local New York coffee roaster that I have been documenting. Since April, I have made photos of the roaster/ commissary kitchen every month and plan on continuing the project indefinitely. Here is the story up to date- http://www.alangastelum.com/abraco4/

I have always been a fan of Ryan Schude’s photography, especially his multi person landscapes, mostly found in his book “one” on his website. I was specifically inspired by the smoke within a few of those images and I wanted to experiment with smoke more. Thanks Ryan for the inspiration!

I spent a few weeks in Treviso, Italy in 2006. At the end of each day, I would spend time watching Italian kids practice soccer. I was amazed my the talent and discipline the young athletes possessed. These photographs are a few memories I have, from my cold fall evenings I would spend observing them.
