“I’ve been working in Black and White for several months, mostly in studio.  I’m hugely inspired by Hedi Slimane and Robert Mapplethorpe.  I love high contrast and single source lighting with a crisp clean minimal background, forcing the viewer the be confronted by my subjects.”

Contemporary B&W- Alan Gastelum

My take on the contemporary B&W image was to really use the contrast of the blacks and whites to reshape the image. I wanted my photographs to be immersed in the blacks and to use the whites to help rescue the image.

Miss Tammie Brown! I shot these in color as well and they take on another era when changed to B&W. Sort of a different take on the 1950′s? She is a fabulous drag queen and all. View more on my blog.

I typically rely on color for my images, but for this assignment I stripped it down to shadows and shapes.

I’m a huge fan of all things Metal. Black Metal, Death Metal, Speed Metal, Stoner Metal, Doom Metal, Sludge Metal and Tech Metal. Basically anything but Glam/Hair Metal. So with the Black and White assignment, I explored the sensitive side of Metal.

I experimented with black and white and also color, plus used my Holga a bit. It was really fun to experiment with both digital and film- something I haven’t done for awhile. Some more of the photos from the shoot are on my photo blog.

Title: Contemporary B&W

Assigner: J.Wesley Brown

Description: I’m sure some of you dabble in the desaturation but in the wake of a few recent exhibitions and writings, I’m starting to think that there may be a new little (or big) movement of B&W photography but done in a contemporary way that takes hold. Let’s give it a shot. I’m not talking about just desaturating images but rather trying to make B&W images that belong in 2009 (or 2010!). This isn’t your high school darkroom assignment. Shoot with contemporary B&W in mind.

This seems to have more of a winter solstice feel…. I wanted to play around with digital collaging…

I’ve been wanting to play around a bit with collaging and digital art. Even though it likely won’t find its way into my portfolio or “work” work, I love having this venue to try new things.
